What is TIN?

A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a unique code/number assigned to every business entity, registered under Value Added Tax (VAT), to keep track of their transactions. Just as individuals are required to have a PAN card for tax purposes, businesses must have a TIN to ensure they are complying with the tax regulations.

A TIN is a  9 or 11 digits depending on different countries. In the United States, a TIN can refer to a Social Security Number (SSN), an Employer Identification Number (EIN), or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), all of which are 9 digits long.

On the other hand, a TIN is typically 11 digits in India, with the last two digits representing the state where the business is registered and the remaining nine digits are assigned to every business by their state government.

Format of the 9-digit TIN

There are three types of TIN and the 9 digits in each type of TIN represent different components:

  • Social Security Number (SSN)

This is one of the most common TINs issued to US citizens by the Social Security Association. The format of the number is XXX-XX-XXXX where the first three digits are based on the geographic region where the business or individual applied for their SSN, the next two digits are assigned randomly, and the last four digits are assigned sequentially from 0001 to 9999.

  • Employer Identification Number (EIN)

This number is used to identify corporations, trusts, and estates that pay taxes. The format of the number is XX-XXXXXXX where the first two digits indicate the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that issued this number and the remaining seven digits are issued to identify a specific employer.

  • Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN)

This number is issued to individuals who are required to have a US Taxpayer Identification Number but are not eligible to obtain it. The format of the number is 9XX-XX-XXXX where the first digit is always 9, the middle two digits indicate the issuance year, and the remaining four digits are issued to identify the individual.

Format of the 11-digit TIN

The TIN consists of 11 digits, organised as follows:

  • 9 Characters

The first nine characters are assigned to every business by the state government.

  • 2 Characters

The last two characters represent the state where the business is registered.

Why is a TIN Number Required In India?

Any business engaging in the buying and selling of goods and services requires a TIN. The purpose of having a TIN is to create a central database for tax-related information for businesses operating in multiple states.

However, knowing the aspects of TIN is as important as the need to verify a TIN while onboarding third parties in your company’s ecosystem.

What is the need for TIN Verification?

  • Ensures Compliance With Tax Regulations

All businesses, whether micro (investment less than 1 crore and turnover less than 5 crores), small (investment less than 10 crores and turnover up to 50 crores), and medium (investment less than 20 crores and turnover up to 100 crores) need to have a TIN. This is important for ensuring that they are adhering to tax regulations provided by the government.

  • Prevents Fraud

With a unique TIN assigned to every business, tax authorities can easily keep track of all their activities. From the sale and purchase of goods and services to making sure they’re paying taxes on time, it helps in creating a transparent system and prevention of fraudulent activities.

  • Streamlines Financial Operations

By providing a centralised system for easy tracking of all tax-related activities, businesses can maintain accurate financial records, track tax liabilities, and improve their cash flow management. This system helps in simplifying and streamlining their financial operations.

Steps to Verify TIN

To verify a TIN using a third-party service provider is an easy and straightforward process which consists of merely three steps:

  • Begin by visiting a third-party service provider’s website. Choose a reliable, trustworthy, and authentic platform like that of authbridge.com.
  • Enter the TIN of the business or third party that you wish to verify.

The API will generate an instantaneous detailed report stating all the information.

Benefits of TIN Verification

TIN (Taxpayer Identification Number) verification offers several significant benefits, particularly for businesses, financial institutions, and government entities. Here are some key advantages:

1. Compliance Assurance

  • Regulatory Compliance: TIN verification ensures that businesses comply with tax regulations by confirming the validity of TINs provided by individuals or entities. This is crucial for avoiding penalties and maintaining good standing with tax authorities.

2. Fraud Prevention

  • Identity Verification: Verifying TINs helps in confirming the identity of individuals or businesses, reducing the risk of fraud. It ensures that the TINs provided are legitimate and belong to the correct entities, thereby minimizing the chances of identity theft or fraudulent transactions.

3. Accurate Record Keeping

  • Data Accuracy: By verifying TINs, businesses can maintain accurate and up-to-date records of their clients, vendors, or employees. This reduces errors in documentation and helps in maintaining a reliable database, which is essential for financial reporting and audits.

4. Streamlined Processes

  • Efficient Operations: TIN verification automates the validation process, saving time and resources for businesses. It streamlines operations, especially in sectors like banking and finance, where verifying customer identity and compliance is critical.

5. Risk Management

6. Improved Customer Trust

  • Enhanced Transparency: Businesses that regularly verify TINs demonstrate a commitment to transparency and due diligence. This can enhance customer trust and build stronger relationships, as clients feel secure knowing that the business adheres to strict verification processes.
