Job applicants in India are increasingly falsifying data regarding educational qualifications and work experience to get their dream job, states a recent nation-wide study.
Background screening company, AuthBridge Research Services, conducted the study named “Background Screening Trends: October 2008 to July 2009” by dividing the country into North, South, East and West zones.
The number of candidates providing false data on educational qualifications, work experience and salaries has sharply risen since the recession. The report read, “Due to the tight market situation, many people have resorted to resume embellishments, identity thefts, forged document and fake degrees.”
The North zone had the largest number of resume fraud cases at 47%, followed by the West at 32%, South at 12% and East at 9%. “From 9% in February, discrepancies leaped to 16% in March ’09. Interestingly, during this time recession was witnessing its peak period,” read the report.
Most candidates seemed to have provided incorrect information regarding work experience and educational qualifications to land jobs in a tough economic scenario.
Nearly 74% of the incidents involved lies about previous employment. There was a tie at 69% for false educational qualifications and addresses. 59% of the applicants lied about tenure, designation and pay packages. Most discrepancies were noted in sectors like banking, IT and ITeS.
